To send olive oil as a gift within Italy you need three things: a well-sealed container, packaging that holds the bottle still and absorbs any leaks, and a courier that accepts food liquids. With these precautions a bottle or tin of extra virgin olive oil travels without problems and arrives within a few working days. Here you will find the practical steps, starting prices, delivery times and the alternatives for anyone who would rather the oil left directly from the producer, ready to give.
In short
- The container matters more than the box: a leak-proof aluminium tin or a glass bottle with a sealed cap, then cling film and tape.
- Pack in layers: absorbent material around the container, shock protection, filler to block every empty space.
- In Italy prices start at €5.65 with Poste Delivery Web, with standard delivery within five working days in most cases.
- Read the courier’s conditions: non-compliant packaging can cost you your refund if there is damage.
- If you want to avoid all this, you can give the adoption of an olive tree: the certificate arrives instantly by email and the oil reaches the recipient’s home according to the adoption calendar.

First of all: glass bottle or tin?
The choice of container decides half the outcome. Glass looks lovely as a gift, but it is fragile and heavy. A tin is less striking, yet it resists knocks and protects the oil from light.
People who ship olive oil every day are clear about it: SpedireAdesso recommends leak-proof aluminium tins of up to 5 litres (in Italian) and advises against shipping oil in glass bottles. If your gift really is a beautiful bottle, that is fine: it can be done, but the packaging needs more care.
A few criteria to help you decide:
| Container | When to choose it | What to take care of when packing |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminium tin (0.5-5 l) | Generous quantities, oil for the family, long journeys | Cap tightly closed, cling film around the cap, filler |
| Glass bottle (250-750 ml) | A gift to present, elegant packaging | Absorbent material, shock protection, dividers if there is more than one bottle |
| Several bottles together | Corporate gifts, packs of two or three | Case with dividers, no contact between bottles |
If you are preparing several parcels for the holidays, keep the oil separate from other gifts: a liquid travels better on its own, and a leak will not ruin the rest. That goes for books, for fabrics and also for perfumes to give at Christmas, which deserve a box of their own.
One last note on the gift itself: if you do not know the recipient’s tastes well, a single-variety oil or an IGP oil are safe choices. To understand what changes between a clear oil and a cloudy one, there is a guide on filtered or unfiltered olive oil.
How to pack olive oil step by step
The clearest rules come from the couriers themselves. The Poste Delivery Business packing guide (in Italian) asks that liquids be shipped in suitable containers, sealed with plastic and tape, with greaseproof paper and absorbent material to contain any leaks. Here is how to put that into practice at home.
- Check the cap. Tighten it well. If it is a screw cap, wrap the neck of the bottle in cling film and secure it with tape.
- Seal the container in a bag. A strong plastic bag, closed with tape, is the first barrier if something drips.
- Add absorbent material. Greaseproof paper, kitchen paper or cotton wadding around the bottle: if the glass cracks, the oil stays inside the parcel.
- Protect against knocks. For fragile items Poste suggests bubble wrap or protective foam around each individual piece.
- Choose a new, rigid box. A double-wall box is best, only slightly larger than the padded contents.
- Lock everything in place. Fill every empty space: when you shake the box, nothing should move.
- Seal with packing tape on all flaps, including the bottom.
Watch out for refunds. Packlink requires glass, plastic and metal to be wrapped in absorbent, waterproof materials and held in place with filler (in Italian). In its rules for bottles, it also excludes non-compliant packaging from cover and considers packaging made only of bubble wrap or newspaper inadequate in the event of damage. In practice: for bottles, use shaped protection such as polystyrene tubes or polyethylene air-cell packaging.
If there is more than one bottle
With two or more bottles, the real risk is that they touch. The most suitable solutions are cases with dividers and anchor points (in Italian), together with air-cell packaging and polystyrene tubes that keep each bottle firmly in place. Polystyrene wine shippers also work well for oil, if the bottle shape is similar.

If you are sending many packages
For a corporate gift to dozens of clients, things change: for large loads you can use a pallet, with the load secured by stretch film. According to Ratioform (in Italian), a pallet is useful mainly above 30 kg, because it allows a neat, level load that reduces breakages and leaks.
Which courier to choose
Not all services treat liquids the same way, so always read the conditions before booking. Here is what the main ones say.
| Service | What it accepts or requires | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Poste Delivery Standard | Oil in suitable containers, with protective packaging that absorbs leaks | Tracked, signature on delivery, two delivery attempts |
| Poste Delivery Express | Packaging suitable for liquids | Delivery in 1-4 working days |
| BRT | Regular parcels up to 150×75×75 cm and 50 kg for automatic sorting | Does not carry perishable food or goods subject to UTIF excise documents |
| Online shipping platforms | Limits set by the platform, for example 30 litres and 30 kg per parcel | They compare several couriers, but packing is still up to you |
Two details about BRT. Its FAQ (in Italian) makes clear that perishable food and goods with UTIF excise documents, meaning mineral oils, are not carried: if handed over by mistake, BRT accepts no liability. Extra virgin olive oil is not a mineral oil, but it is still a food: ask for confirmation at the counter or from customer service. The BRT 2026 manual (in Italian) also points out that the carrier’s liability for loss or damage is limited by law and also depends on whether the packaging is adequate. The same manual sets the limits for automatic sorting: regular shape, maximum 150×75×75 cm, 50 kg, and length plus width within 180 cm.
As for online platforms, SpedireAdesso sets a maximum of 30 litres of oil per parcel (in Italian) and a weight within 30 kg: far beyond a gift, but useful if you are sending a supply for the whole year.
Costs and delivery times in Italy
The price depends mainly on weight and service. As a reference, Poste Delivery Web starts at €5.65 for Italy (in Italian, 2026 figure). Remember that a 500 ml bottle, with glass and packaging, easily approaches or exceeds one kilo: so expect a weight band above the minimum, and check the online quote before paying.
On timing:
- Poste Delivery Standard promises delivery within five working days in 90% of cases (in Italian).
- Poste Delivery Express delivers in 1-4 working days.
- Both services are tracked and require a signature on delivery.
Services such as insurance, proof of delivery and cash on delivery are available on request, for an extra charge. For a fine bottle, insurance is worth the small extra cost.
If the gift is for a specific date, ship with a margin. Over the holidays volumes rise and five working days can turn into a calendar week, between weekends and bank holidays.
Address, label and delivery
A well-packed parcel can still get lost because of a badly written address. The general terms of Poste Delivery Standard (in Italian) ask you to fill in the waybill with the information required and to show the same sender and recipient details on the package.
A few practical tips:
- Write the exact first name and surname as they appear on the doorbell or letterbox.
- Add the recipient’s phone number, if the service allows it: it helps the courier if there is any doubt.
- Mark the box “fragile” and “this way up”, with arrows pointing upwards. It does not replace good packing, but it helps whoever handles it.
- Put the greetings card in a separate bag: if there were a leak, it would stay readable.
If the recipient is not at home, Poste Delivery Standard makes two delivery attempts. After the notice, they have 10 days to collect the parcel at the post office indicated. If the gift is a surprise, consider an office address or a relative you know will be in.
What if the gift is going abroad?
Outside Italy the rules change from country to country and from courier to courier. Before shipping, check three things with the service you choose:
- whether edible oil is allowed into that country, and in what quantity;
- which documents are needed: outside the European Union the courier usually asks you to declare contents and value for customs;
- who pays any duties and taxes on arrival, so the recipient is not left with a surprise bill.
As for packing, the same rules seen above apply, with one more reason to choose a tin: a long journey means more handling.
Having the oil sent directly by the producer
There is a way to give olive oil without boxes, tape and queues at the counter: let the producer send it. With UFarmer you can adopt an olive tree from small, carefully selected Italian olive oil producers. The recipient instantly receives the adoption certificate with your message by email, even on the day you choose, follows the season with updates from the producer and, at the end of the cycle, receives their extra virgin olive oil at home according to the adoption calendar. Olive tree adoptions start from €69.

You can make the gift even more personal, for a fee, with a vinyl message, a wooden tag or a personal label, even after purchase. Among the producers you will find, for example, the extra virgin olive oil from Il Merlo in a 500 ml format or the Biancolilla IGP from Fratelli Bonanno in 250 ml. If you need something to put under the tree, remember that only our tasting boxes arrive before Christmas, for orders placed by 17 December. To understand every step, from choosing to harvest, see the page on how adoption works, and for more ideas read our guide to gifts for olive oil lovers.
Our point of view
Sending a bottle of olive oil is a lovely gesture, and with good packing it works. But we know how much time it takes: finding the right box, the filler, a courier that accepts liquids, and then hoping it all arrives intact.
That is why we think the best gift for someone who loves olive oil is one that tells them where it comes from. When you adopt an olive tree with us, the recipient does not just open a parcel: they read your message on the certificate, follow the season with the producer’s updates and, at the end of the cycle, taste the fruit of a year’s work.
We select small Italian olive oil producers directly, and the oil leaves from them, ready to be given. You are left with the most enjoyable part: choosing the olive tree, writing the message and deciding the day it arrives.
Frequently asked questions
Can you send olive oil with Poste Italiane?
Yes. Poste Delivery Standard accepts oil if it is in containers suitable for transport and packed with protective materials able to absorb any leaks. The service is tracked and requires a signature on delivery.
Is it better to send oil in a bottle or a tin?
For travelling, a leak-proof aluminium tin is the safest choice: it resists knocks and protects from light. A glass bottle is more elegant as a gift, but it must be wrapped in absorbent material, protected with shaped packaging and held in place in the box.
How long does a parcel of oil take to arrive?
With Poste Delivery Standard, delivery takes place within five working days in 90% of cases; with Poste Delivery Express in 1-4 working days. Over the holidays it is worth shipping a few days early.
Can I give olive oil without shipping it myself?
Yes, for example with the adoption of an olive tree: the certificate with your message arrives instantly by email, even on the day you choose, and the extra virgin olive oil reaches the recipient’s home according to the adoption calendar. If you need a gift delivered before Christmas, choose a tasting box: it arrives in time for orders placed by 17 December.
