Castello di Buttrio is a wine, but also a place, a tradition, and a family with a memory to perpetuate.

In this land cultivated with vines since the Middle Ages, the history of this place emerges within the walls of the ancient castle, originally built around the 11th century in a strategic position and later destroyed.

The current castle, reconstructed in the 1600s, overlooks the undulating expanse of the Friuli Colli Orientali denomination, stretching endlessly towards the sea and the mountains. Contested and besieged, a stage for successive transformations, it has been the residence of numerous families until it became, in 1994, the property of Marco Felluga.

His daughter, Alessandra Felluga, initiated a lengthy recovery process that witnessed, plot by plot, the expansion of the lands, the renovation of historic vineyards, and the rise of a winemaking company founded on excellence, in the deepest respect for the land and its authenticity.

Our wine is a tale that speaks of the land, of stories and emotions, of the places and the people who inhabited them.

In this context, the vine finds its ideal conditions and acquires the elements that give the wine its character. Understanding and valorizing this richness are the principles underlying Castello di Buttrio, respecting the natural cycle of plants and their fruits, dedicating themselves to daily work, in the vineyard and in the cellar.

Castello di Buttrio is the perfect synthesis of nature and the patient work of man.

Climate, exposure, and soil in perfect balance contribute to expressing the grape varieties through the land that nurtures them. The ponca, or flysch, is the distinctive mother rock typical of this territory, a sedimentary formation consisting of repeated layers of generally marly limestone and sandstone deposited by water flows in the Eocene period.

Precious vineyards dating back to the ’30s, ’40s, and early ’50s with tall and austere vines, marked by time, consistent in producing uniquely high-quality wines even in less favorable vintages. Cultivated with Friulano, Merlot, Verduzzo, Malvasia, and Ribolla, the old vines are the natural continuation of the garden surrounding the castle. Alongside maritime pines, cypresses, fragrant osmanthus, and magnolias, they stand as silent guardians of the history of Castello di Buttrio.

Wine is tradition and, at the same time, innovation. It must be honest towards the fruit and respect, enhancing it, the sense of place.

For me, these are the fundamental conditions for quality and uniqueness in winemaking. Alessandra Felluga
